Spend An Evening With Fight Club

Fight Club is a 1996 novel and a 1999 movie. It stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. The movie begins with an unnamed man. He works for a car company. His job is to deal with recalls. He has to analyze the cost of them against the benefit. It is a very boring and mundane job. Norton, the unnamed man, narrates the entire movie.

He has to travel frequently and lives in a constant state of jet lag. He realizes that he no longer controls his life. He feels that his entire identity is about possessions and his job.

This leads him to severe insomnia. At his doctor's suggestions, he attends support groups. They are groups that he has no business attending. Things like cancer support, for example. He finds listening to the suffering of others, gives him an outlet. He can cry and release emotions. He finally is able to sleep. This works well for some time, until he meets Marla.

She is doing the exact same things as he is. He feels threatened and invaded. How dare she steal his idea! She reminds him that he is a faker. They finally come to an agreement. They decide to split up the support groups. He will take some and she will take the others. However, he can no longer sleep again.

About this time, he meets Tyler Durdin. Tyler is a very antisocial person. He is almost the man's exact opposite. Tyler gives him his phone number as they part. Soon after, his apartment explodes. He calls and asks Tyler, if he can stay with him. Tyler agrees, but there is a catch. He has to hit Tyler in the face. They get into a big fight and when it is over, they feel better.

When he gets to Tyler's home, he is surprised. It is an old, dilapidated house. There is unsafe electric conditions and the roof leaks. However, he decides to stay. Sometime later, he calls Marla. He wants to be sure that she will not crash his support group. Marla tells him that she has taken an overdose of pills. She asks him to come over and watch her die. As she rambles, he sets the phone down and leaves. Tyler picks up the phone.

Tyler and Marla become lovers. The narrator is a bit surprised at this outcome. He is more surprised when Tyler asks the man a favor. Never talk to Marla about him, is his request. It is an odd demand, but he agrees. In the meantime, the fighting expands. Many men become involved and it becomes a club.

They set specific rules for their club. You can never talk about it. Fighting is between two men. If it is your first night, you have to fight. The club continues and gains a lot of popularity. As it expands, the man notices, more people in everyday life, which are members.

Then he learns of a conspiracy called project Mayhem. What has Tyler gotten himself involved in? The story takes many twists and turns. It leads to an exciting climax. You will not want to miss the conclusion of Fight Club.
